Pre-launch project

From Freelancer to Creator

Freelance AI
Workbench.

A practical, privacy-conscious and affordable AI workbench for independent journalists working without newsroom infrastructure.

This is not about the cheap mass production of AI-generated copy. Independent journalists should be able to use AI across their entire solo operation, develop formats of their own and reach audiences directly.

See what the pilot will test

AI across the entire working day

More than writing with ChatGPT: the pilot explores five areas of work – then selects three or four concrete workflows to test.

  1. 01Researchsources, material, verification
  2. 02Producetext, audio, video, visual formats
  3. 03Office and assignmentspitches, deadlines, follow-ups
  4. 04Formats of your ownprofile, media, recognition
  5. 05Audience and businessvisibility, relationships, autonomy

The gap

Newsrooms have policies, tools and training. Many freelancers have a free ChatGPT account – and a long list of unanswered questions.

Many freelance journalists first encounter generative AI as a writing tool: for transcription, translation, headlines, SEO or polishing copy. Those uses matter, but they cover only a small part of a freelancer's working life. Research, production, administration, visibility, audience development and business decisions all compete for the same limited time.

The Workbench examines free, affordable and locally deployable tools alongside paid options. Affordable does not mean free: an investment can make sense when it saves time, improves quality or creates new revenue opportunities. What matters is what is practical, privacy-conscious and economically viable for freelancers – and when privacy, source protection or unreliable output argue against using AI.

The proposed pilot

Three or four workflows. A small group of freelancers. No platform built before anyone knows whether it helps.

The workflows will be co-designed and tested with freelance journalists. The list is deliberately provisional: testing should decide what survives.

01

From expertise to creator profile

Turn specialist knowledge into a clear public profile and several journalistic formats, without flattening every idea into generic content.

02

One body of research, several formats

Prepare material accountably for text, audio, video and social media while keeping sources, decisions and human checks visible.

03

A calmer solo desk

Organize pitches, assignments, deadlines and follow-ups so that administration does not quietly swallow the week.

04

Know what may go where

Decide which data and tasks can responsibly be handled by which AI systems – including the entirely respectable decision not to use one.

What the pilot should produce

Small enough to test. Useful enough to keep.

  • Tested workflow cardsclear steps, limits and human checkpoints
  • Reusable assistants or skillsfor selected recurring tasks
  • A transparent tool-and-cost guideincluding affordable and privacy-conscious choices
  • A privacy, source and trust checkbefore material enters an AI system
  • A documented evaluationwith selected public findings – including what failed, not just what looked good in a demo

Why “creator” belongs here

A creator is not defined by a ring light.

For this project, becoming a creator means moving beyond a career built entirely around individual commissions. It means turning expertise into recognizable formats, becoming more visible, publishing across the media that fit the story and building a direct relationship with an audience.

Video may be part of that. So may a newsletter, a podcast, an explainer, a workshop or a format that has not acquired an impressive English label yet. The point is greater editorial and economic autonomy.

Behind the project

Barbara Weidmann

Independent journalist, multimedia trainer and certified AI trainer

I have worked as an independent journalist for more than two decades and have been testing generative AI in practical workflows since late 2022. My training covers research, text, transcription, images, audio, video, custom assistants and agentic workflows, always with privacy, source protection and human control in view.

I know the working reality of freelancers from my own practice and from years of professional engagement: I served for several years as deputy chair of the Freelance Journalists Group within the Bavarian Journalists' Association, contributed to its mentoring program for ten years and am a member of Freischreiber.

The Workbench has been on my mind for almost two years. The next step is to turn many conversations and individual workshops into a documented pilot project.

Current status

Pre-launch means pre-launch.

This page documents the project concept as it develops. No finished platform, invented user numbers or miraculous productivity percentages. Pilot design, testing notes and public resources will be added here as the work progresses.
